Cleanup crews secure plans for removal of 60ft shipping vessel in the Chinese Harbor
SANTA CRUZ ISLAND, Calif. – The United States Coast guard reported successful progress of salvage operations of the 60ft grounded shipping vessel in the Chinese Harbor off Santa Cruz island
Following cleanup efforts Tuesday morning, the Seperanze Marie vessel was moved from a rocky beach on Santa Cruz island and crews were able to recover the hydrocarbon products aboard.
1,000 gallons of diesel fuel were onboard with cleanup crews working to contain any spill in the area over the weekend.
The U.S Coast Guard established a 4,000-yard safety zone around the 60-foot squid shipping vessel that went aground in the Chinese Harbor off Santa Cruz Island Dec. 15. The zone will ensure nearby fishing boats and community members are clear of the area.
No vessel or personnel without permission from the Captain of the Port will be allowed to travel in the designated area. The zone is active and remains in place until January 2023.
Current plans are to allow the ship to sink for divers to perform a completely salvage when weather allows.
The U. S. Coast Guard, California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Office of Spill Prevention & Response alongside state and local agencies continue to respond to the salvage of the Speranza Marie vessel.
