Supreme Court leak sparks reproductive rights demonstrations along coast

CALIFORNIA, Calif.-In the wake of a leaked Roe v. Wade Supreme Court document people for and against legalized abortion took to the streets.

Pro-choice supporters rallied in De La Guerra Plaza in Santa Barbara, outside Santa Maria City Hall and in downtown San Luis Obispo.

In Ventura rival rallies took place on opposing corners of a busy intersection in front of the Ventura County Government Center.

Supporters on all sides of the issue are anxious to learn whether the draft opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito holds true.

The draft appears to show that five justices side with a pending case that challenges the 1973 Roe verses Wade ruling.

Former California State Senator Hannah Beth Jackson spoke to the crowd in Santa Barbara about taking action.

"There's a lot that we can do, certainly support their legislators that are fighting or reproductive health care," said Jackson.

Planned Parenthood California Central Coast CEO Jenna Tosh said, "There are 26 states that are likely or certain to ban abortion immediately following a Supreme Court ruling, including 13 states which have what are known as trigger laws on the books."

Goleta resident Caroline Abate said she was notified about the rally in Ventura but didn't go.

"This is a very important first step toward protecting the sanctity of every persons life, from their earliest unborn moments," said Abate, "at the same time, my hope is that it can be the start of new thoughtful and respectful conversations about this extremely consequential issue."

Demonstrations for and against abortion rights are likely to continue before and after the court makes a final ruling public in June or July.
