Owner of “Mirror Bus” seen throughout Isla Vista now facing rape charges
ISLA VISTA, Calif. - A man who was arrested in Isla Vista earlier this year on stalking charges is now facing more than a dozen new felony charges including rape after video evidence appeared to show him committing sexual assault against multiple women.
Zachary Coughlin, 43, gained notoriety on social media when his distinct vehicle arrived in Isla Vista. The converted bus referred to as the "Mirror Bus" parked on Isla Vista streets and sheriff's deputies quickly began receiving reports of bizarre and inappropriate behavior by Coughlin.
In May, Coughlin was arrested on felony stalking charges after investigators combed through his social media pages and interviewed multiple witnesses.
On Wednesday, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office said Coughlin, who was already in custody, was arrested again with more charges looming.
As part of their initial investigation, detectives assigned to the case reviewed digital storage devices and uncovered evidence of multiple sexual assaults upon women at the hands of Coughlin.
Detectives were able to identify two women believed to be victims of sexual assault.
On Thursday, Oct. 1, Coughlin was arrested and is now facing 17 new felony charges. These charges include rape, sexual penetration and kidnapping.
He is being held on a $1 million bail regarding the new charges.
