AVILA BEACH, Calif. (KEYT) – Around 100 people were evacuated and about 200 were asked to shelter in place after a gas leak was detected during trenching operations near Canvasback Place Thursday.

No one was sickened in the area shared the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department.

On Feb. 26, around 10:15 a.m., a large-diameter natural gas line was damaged during a trenching project in the 2100 block of Canvasback Place causing an active leak in the residential neighborhood stated the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department.

Arriving crews found a significant gas leak and worked to establish a safety perimeter out of an abundance of caution resulting in evacuations in the Bay Estates area and a shelter-in-place order explained the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department.

According to the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department, the leak was halted around noon after utility personnel were able to secure the one-inch gas line leak and the evacuations and shelter-in-place orders were lifted once the area was deemed safe.

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's deputies and employees of the Port San Luis Harbor assisted with the evacuations and traffic control alongside county firefighters and utility workers noted the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department.

"This incident highlights the importance of coordinated, multi-agency response and the cooperation of our community," shared a spokesperson with the countywide fire department. "We appreciate residents for following safety directions and our partner agencies for their swift assistance."
