Atascadero man arrested for killing child in fatal hit and run crash

ATASCADERO, Calif. – UPDATED ARTICLE: APD officers arrested a man for vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony hit and run charges after he killed an 11-year-old boy Friday.

The driver, a 31-year-old Atascadero man, struck the boy just before 3:00 p.m. Friday on the 10800 block of El Camino Real, according to the Atascadero Police Department.

The boy was unresponsive and succumbed to his injuries despite life-saving efforts from first responders, according to the APD.

The APD launched an investigation and found out the boy was walking home from school when the Ford-150 responsible for the crash hit him from behind.

Officers later found the car left behind near an apartment building a few blocks away from the crash, thanks to surveillance footage.

This remains an active investigation and the APD is seeking help from the public. Those with additional information are urged to contact the APD or submit images they feel are helpful.

According to the City of Atascadero, El Camino Real is closed between El Bordo Avenue and The Knolls at Avenida Maria and the public is asked to avoid the area during the investigation.
