Cal Poly drops 3rd straight in blowout loss at San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Senior guard Trevon Taylor (above) led the Cal Poly men's basketball program with nine points Tuesday evening, but a late first-half run from San Jose State helped outdistance the Mustangs, who fell inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center, 65-43.

Senior forward Alimamy Koroma added a team leading five rebounds for Cal Poly (5-6), which shot 86.7 (13-for-15) percent from the free throw line, but converted just two of 23 three-point attempts.

San Jose State (9-4), which shot 53.8 (14-for-26) percent during the first half, closed the period with a 17-4 run to take a 34-22 lead into the break. The Spartans then maintained a double-digit advantage the remainder of the game.

Cal Poly returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 22, completing Big West Conference preparations with a 4 p.m. home matchup against NAIA San Diego Christian.

A Taylor three-point play eight minutes into action Tuesday handed Cal Poly its largest lead of the night at 13-8.

The Mustangs led twice more during the opening half – the second instance coming after a Koroma layup provided the Mustangs an 18-17 edge with seven minutes to play.

Two free throws from San Jose State guard Omari Moore, however, kickstarted the 17-4 Spartan run to close the half.

Cal Poly twice cut San Jose State's lead to 10 points early during the second half but, facing a 36-26 deficit, the Mustangs were kept without a field goal for a four-and-a-half-minute span and slipped to a 22-point disadvantage.
