More than 30 marching bands compete in Keepin’ the Music Alive field competition

OXNARD, Calif.

Dozens of marching bands from local high schools took part in an annual competition.

The bands performed in the 34th Keepin' the Music Alive field show tournament and band competition hosted by Oxnard High School.

Band members said they like more than the music.

Oxnard High junior Sebastian Guitierrez said he likes, "Being together, like a family, we are really bonded. "

Band director Andrew Spence took over the competition from his predecessor Fundi Legohn.

As host, Oxnard can't win trophies but the band can be scored by the judges.

"They are judging music performance, how well you play, musical affect, how well does the music affect your audience, does it move them."

It takes countless volunteers.

Some volunteers spent the morning cleaning the stands after the school's winning first round CIF homecoming game and fireworks show.

Other volunteers help with fundraising efforts.

Norma Rees makes a quilt for the raffle every year

" I loved it when my kids were in band," said Rees.

When her daughter graduated, she just kept helping.

Some of the bands will compete again in upcoming holiday parades.
