Lompoc police release video of fatal shooting

LOMPOC, Calif. - The Lompoc Police Department has released video and audio of an officer-involved shooting in March that left one man dead.

Several videos and audio recordings were released Thursday on the department's YouTube page.

The recordings show the deadly shooting death of 26-year-old Krys Brandon Ruiz, who was shot and killed by police on March 28. Ruiz was shot by police who were responded to an alley in the area of North H and G streets.

The videos show officers arriving on scene and pointing their weapons at Ruiz, who was reported to be in possession of a gun. Ruiz was shot about one minute after police arrived on scene. In the provided videos, Ruiz is seen running directly at the officers, who responded by firing several shots at him.

Ruiz died at the scene. The officers involved in the incident have been identified by the police department as Corporal Andrew White and Officer Mauricio Calderon. White is a 14-year veteran with the department and Calderon has 25 years of service in law enforcement, including 12 years with LPD.

Both officers are on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in instances of officer-involved shootings.

The videos were captured on the dash cameras of three responding police vehicle. The police department said the videos are unedited but some have been enhanced to improve clarity. A 911 call released from the department details a caller describing a man wearing dark clothing who was believed to be holding a gun. Police later confirmed that the man was armed only with a knife. The knife was taken into evidence, the department said.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office and the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the shooting.

You can watch the videos in their entirety on the Lompoc Police Department's YouTube page. The videos are graphic in nature and may be disturbing to some.
