Lompoc Census Caravan visits neighborhoods with low self-response rate

2020 census

LOMPOC, Calif. - A Lompoc Census Caravan traveled through neighborhoods Saturday afternoon to remind residents of the importance of participating in the 2020 Census.

The caravan met at the Lompoc Aquatic Center on West College Avenue around 12:30 p.m. to decorate their cars.

From there, the parade traveled through the neighborhoods south of Lompoc High School to Ocean Avenue which were noted as having a particularly low self-response rate to the 2020 Census.

While the overall Lompoc self-response rate is at 70.7%, which is higher than Lompoc’s 2010 census final self-response rate of 68.5%, the self-response rate in the area of the census caravan is only 59.7%.

Participants hope the caravan will grab residents' attentions, remind them and show them the importance of responding to the census, which determines how much money the city is allocated by the federal government. This includes funding for hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other public wellness resources.

Residents near the caravan are encouraged to come outside of their homes as they are able and wave hello to the caravan as it passes by.

Participating vehicles include a Santa Barbara County Promotores Network vehicle, a City of Lompoc Transit bus, a Lompoc Recreation Division van, the Charlotte’s Web Mobile Children’s Library, members of the Healthy Lompoc Coalition, a Lompoc Unified School District school bus, Alpha Resource Center, Welcome Every Baby, Health Linkages, Spanish-speaking community health workers and other community representatives.
