Five-year Montecito Mudslide remembrance event will light up the night in honor of 23 lives lost

Montecito resident Marco Farrell

MONTECITO, Calif. – The five-year anniversary of the Montecito Mudslides will be marked in a "Raising Our Light" ceremony to commemorate the 23 lives lost in the debris flow on Jan. 9.

Montecito firefighters will light 23 candles in honor of the lives lost and a searchlight will illuminate Montecito Union School as a beacon of community support and solidarity.

The Montecito Fire Protection District alongside local community organizations invites the public to gather in the Montecito Union School school courtyard at 6 p.m. to not only light up the night, but also hear from speakers and a reading of the names of the 23 people lost in 2018.

The Rosewood Miramar Montecito will be on-site to provide soup and a hot drink for those who bear the winter night to come out and remember the lives lost, the survivors, and the resilience of the community.

News Channel 3-12 will live stream the event here.

Representatives of the Community Wellness Team will be on-site for the Raising Our Light ceremony to provide support for anyone in need or looking to connect. Community members are welcome to contact the CWT at any time by calling 805-364-2750.
