Isla Vista patio partially collapses
Cliffside properties in Isla Vista enjoy beautiful views, but must deal with potentially dangerous erosion

ISLA VISTA, Calif. - One Isla Vista oceanfront property's patio partially collapsed on Saturday afternoon.

The house on Del Playa Drive saw about 10 feet of patio, including furniture and part of the railing, fall into the ocean. No injuries were reported.

"I kind of saw it coming, honestly," Brian Brotski, who lives on the block. "Now, we probably won't be kicking it in this corner very often. I mean, we expect it. Gotta live it up when we're here, though."

Santa Barbara County has an erosion policy in place for the 84 cliffside properties on Del Playa Drive. The County is now working to update that policy to create a bigger buffer zone between the properties and the cliff.

Properties that fall into that buffer zone have to hire an expert to prove that the building is structurally safe.
