Charting Courses, Breaking Bread, and Getting Hired: Career Exploration Day at Allan Hancock College

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (KEYT) - Allan Hancock College held its annual Career Exploration Day at its Santa Maria campus.

The college hosted about 1,300 local high school students and featured 138 exhibitors representing a variety of industries and college career programs.

Participating students got to meet with business representatives, college faculty, staff and current students, with food and entertainment provided during the event.

This year, current Allan Hancock College students were encouraged to attend as well.

Among the participating exhibitors, 44 businesses were actively seeking to fill entry-level positions.

“So it's twofold,” says David Hernandez, a career counselor at Allan Hancock College. “High school students are exploring what opportunities are available. But then we also have the opportunities for the college students able to network with actual employers that are hiring. So we've asked them to come with their resumes, be ready to interview and sometimes even get the jobs right on the spot.”

Companies accepting resumes during the event include Lompoc Unified School District, Bonipak / Betteravia Farms, Honda of Santa Maria and Central Coast Incubator.
