SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) The Santa Barbara Association of Realtors met with State Sen. Ben Allen on Wednesday.

Allen is running for Insurance Commissioner.

The Santa Monica resident said he understands why people in real estate are taking an interest in this race.

Their clients are having a difficult time getting insurance following disasters.

Allen said he has been helping his residents recover from the recent fires and can understand the concerns of locals impacted by the Thomas Fire and Montecito mudslide.

Allen intends to focus on risk reduction that should be rewarded by the insurance Industry.

"We have very similar challenges in so many of my communities as you do here and I'm just here meeting with people, talking about the challenges that are here and seeing what we can do to make our communities safer and more insurable," said Allen.

Allen is facing fellow Democrat Jane Kim in November.

She is proposing a single payer disaster insurance program and is backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Allen said he doesn't want homeowners to have the insurance of last resort under the California FAIR Plan.

He also met with the leader of the Bucket Brigade and Montecito residents during his stop in Santa Barbara.
