Stair repairs underway to improve beach access in Cayucos

People heading to Cayucos may notice construction at the beach.

Construction is underway to replace old stairs at Cayucos 1st Street beach.

Locals rated beach access as important in a 2018 Parks and Recreation Needs Assessment.

The coastal access stairway under construction leads to the south end of the Cayucos downtown beach area.

California Coastal Conservancy supports the county’s commitment to develop access along its beaches.

The original wooden stairway deteriorated over three decades and has been closed for several years. The new concrete stairs will be built with proper tread and handrails.

Construction will cost more than $234,000. The funding comes from the California Coastal Conservancy, Cayucos Business Improvement District; District One Community Project funds, County Park Reserves, and Quimby Area 2 funds.

The stairs are slated to open by the end of the year.
