Holiday Fire 100% contained

[7/11/2018 6:30 p.m.] Santa Barbara County Fire officials say the Holiday Fire is now 100% controlled and burned 113 acres. Full containment was achieved on July 10, 2018.

Fire officials have also updated the structures lost count to 10 single family homes destroyed, 3 damaged, and 14 other non-residence buildings destroyed.

The estimated cost to fight this fire is $1.5 million.

A single fire engine will patrol the area for the next couple of days to make sure the fire remains out.

[7/10/2018 5:58 p.m.] As of 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2018, the Holiday Fire is 100% contained.

Santa Barbara County Fire spokesperson Mike Eliason said crews expect to have the fire “100% controlled” by 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 11 — pending any winds.

[7/10/2018 7:30 a.m.] The Holiday Fire remains 95% contained, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

The fire is expected to be 100% contained by 6 p.m. Tuesday with the fire expected to be completely out by Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department will continue to patrol the area with one engine for several days, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

[7/9/2018 7:30 p.m.] The Holiday Fire is now 95% contained, according to Cal Fire.

[7/9/2018 7:25 a.m.] The Holiday Fire is now 90% contained, according to Santa Barbara County Fire. The acres burned remains at 100 and 150 fire personnel are assigned to the incident Monday morning.

[7/8/2018 5:00 p.m.] Effective at 6 p.m., the areas that remain under Mandatory Evacuation for the Holiday Fire will be downgraded to an Exclusion Zone open to residents only. The area that was under Evacuation Warning has been lifted.

[7/8/2018 4:00 p.m.] Fire Officials say 13 single family residences were destroyed, 3 single family residences were damaged, and 15 outbuildings including barns, workshops, and sheds have been destroyed due to the Holiday Fire.

[7/8/2018 7:00 a.m.] Containment on the Holiday Fire remains at 80% Sunday morning. Fire Officials say 100 acres have burned and full containment is expected by July 11.

Mike Eliason reports that 10 homes have been destroyed and 3 others have been damaged. In addition, 9 other buildings have also been destroyed. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Reduced areas of mandatory evacuation remain the same as of Saturday afternoon. Approximately 500 firefighters remain on scene. Law enforcement remains on scene and at road barricades.

[7/7/2018 4:30 p.m.] Firefighters made good progress on the Holiday Fire Saturday, with containment now at 80%. Agency leaders said this was a significant fire, not seen locally since 1990. 100 acres burned, with no reports of injuries.

80% of evacuation orders will be lifted at 5:00 p.m. Saturday. 600 people will remain in the mandatory evacuation area, which is homes that were damaged or destroyed in the fire. Off-limits areas will be limited to homes accessed along North Fairview Avenue north of La Goleta Road. The remaining 2,600 people will be able to return home.

[7/7/2018 10:30 a.m.] Gov. Jerry Brown declared a State of Emergency due to the ongoing battle against the Holiday Fire. The move allows state and federal emergency funding for the firefighting efforts.

[7/7/2018 10:10 a.m.] The city of Goleta declared a State of Emergency for the city due to the Holiday Fire. Only a small portion of the fire touched the edge of the city limits but was beaten back by firefighters, and no other part of the fire is known to have burned within the city.

“Safety is our paramount concern right now and we urge all residents to remain vigilant. Please respect all evacuation orders for your own safety and well being. As the temperature rises today, stay cool and hydrated and take care of yourself and your pets,” said Goleta Mayor Paula Perotte

Update from the Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network:

We have been able to rescue many animals and we have a team being escorted to the center now to rescue the rest of our birds and limited supplies. Windy conditions are still a concern. Most of our animals have been saved, and they are at various locations being cared for.

From the last report, the center has been burned around the edges, but our facility is still standing. We are so grateful, knowing many of our amazing neighbors have not been as lucky. Still, we have to be evacuated and are still very concerned for the area.

We want to sincerely thank the Humane Society, SB Animal Control, Firefighters, our staff, and our volunteers who have been tremendously committed, persistent, and generous.

[7/7/2018 10:00 a.m.] Helicopters have been spotted above areas of fire in the Goleta area, No water or retardant drops have been spotted so far, but are expected to be a crucial part of Saturday’s firefighting efforts.

Officials from the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District are monitoring air levels, which have not slipped below “moderate,” although local instances of higher air pollution could happen. Air Quality leaders advise people to be prepared to limit their exposure to smoky conditions, especially those who have lung issues.

[7/7/2018 9:20 a.m.] A home that smoldered for hours overnight erupted in flames Saturday morning along the 1100 block of North Fairview, the latest dramatic example of the power from the Holiday Fire. Firefighters have noted no forward spread of the fire, but are wary of windy conditions that could easily send sparks further.

[7/7/2018 8:00 a.m.] The Santa Barbara County Fire Department continues to work on a fire burning in Goleta.

Evacuations remain in effect for the areas North of Cathedral Oaks up to West Camino Cielo Road, and from La Patera Lane east to Patterson Avenue.

Everyone should be out of this area at this time. An evacuation center has been set up at the Goleta Valley Community Center (5679 Hollister Avenue, Goleta CA 93117) Large animals can be taken to Earl Warren Showgrounds.

Small animals can be taken to the SB County Animal Shelter (5473 Overpass Road, Goleta, CA 93117). For more information, tune to local media.

[7/7/2018 7:00 a.m.] Fire officials said the Holiday Fire is 5% contained and 60 acres have burned. Mandatory evacuations remain in place. At a Saturday morning fire briefing, firefighters were told forward progress of the flames has stopped.

[7/7/2018 6:21 a.m.] Southern California Edison says under 734 customers in the area near the Holiday Fire are without power. At one point 2,770 customers were without power in the area. Multiple power lines are down. SCE crews are working to restore power where they can.

[7/7/2018 3:02 a.m.] Santa Barbara County has declared a local emergency due to the Holiday Fire burning in the area north of Goleta.

The county says 3,200 people live in the area under evacuation due to the fire. The Director of County Emergency Services declared the emergency proclamation. It is expected to the ratified by the Board of Supervisors at its next meeting on Tuesday July 10.

Proclaiming a local state of emergency insures that county resources are available to suppress the fire.

[7/7/2018 12:45 a.m.] 50-80 acres have burned. More than 30 fire engines are on scene fighting this blaze. 2,200 to 2,500 people have been told to evacuate. Cathedral Oaks Road is closed between Carlo Drive and Patterson Avenue.

[7/6/2018 11:25 p.m.] One hundred and 20 firefighters on scene, 20 structures lost. No containment.

Small animals can be taken to the Santa Barbara Humane Society at 5399 Overpass Road.

Livestock trailers are moving everything they can right now, trailers are going up Fairview trying to evacuate animals. Large animals can go to Earl Warren Showgrounds.

ORIGINAL STORY

Firefighters are battling a fast-moving fire that sparked in the Goleta hills in the 1500 block of Holiday Hills.

It was reported around 8:40 Friday night just off Cathedral Oaks and Fairview area.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department says multiple structures threatened and mandatory evacuations underway. If you are in the area and see the fire or feel threatened, leave immediately.

Mandatory evacuations are underway north of Cathedral Oaks between Patterson and Fairview.

Road closures are expected. Motorists are advised.

County Fire spokesperson Mike Eliason confirmed that there are structures burning. One home is engulfed on 1400 blk of Holiday Hill Road. Others are burning on a nearby hill.

The area is experiencing powerful winds. We are hearing that those winds are pushing the fire straight down Fairview towards U.S. Highway 101.

The fire is being called the Holiday Fire. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department posted on social media that the fire began at a home and then spread to nearby brush. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Red Cross is setting up a shelter for evacuees at the Goleta Valley Community Center located at 5679 Hollister Avenue.

The Sheriff’s Office asks everyone to only call 911 in case of a real emergency at this time as a large number of their resources are being allocated to this fire.

So Cal Edison is reporting nearly 2800 customers are without power in the Cathedral Oaks area.
