CAL FIRE launches new Ready for Wildfire app

‘Ready for Wildfire,’ a new app by CAL FIRE puts a library of step-by-step checklists in the palms of Central Coast residents.

The app allows homeowners to track their progress when creating defensible space, hardening their homes with fire-resistant construction, assembling an emergency supply kit, and creating a family communication and evacuation plan. It’s all done with a tap of a finger.

The free app also features a fire map that keeps track of active wildfires throughout the state, as well as a fire incident log and a section to keep tabs on CAL FIRE tweets.

“One of the many benefits of our new Ready for Wildfire app is the timely and accurate information it provides to residents about a wildfire in their area,” said Chief Ken Pimlott, CAL FIRE director and California’s state forester. “I am excited about this new valuable tool that will provide early alerts to the public to help ensure their safety.”

Users can sign up for customized alerts that will send a push notification to their mobile device or a text message when CAL FIRE crews are responding to a wildfire nearby.

Users can also sign up to receive alerts from multiple counties, or go statewide. And perhaps one of the better built-in features the app offers is the ability for the user to be alerted of a wildfire within 30 miles of their device.

Anyone that downloads and installs the app can enter the Ready for Wildfire Sweepstakes for a chance to win up to $10,000. “The grand prize winner will be able to purchase home hardening materials to prepare their home against wildfire and flying embers that can travel up to a mile ahead of a wildfire,” said CAL FIRE in a statement. “No state funds were used for prizes.”

The sweepstake is sponsored and funded by iHeartMedia in partnership with the Ready for Wildfire campaign. The promotion ends on May 21.

To download the app, visit the App Store or the Google Play Store, and search for CAL FIRE.
