ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. – A non-profit organization in Arroyo Grande is helping to dig up the old and plant something new. The Tree Guild of Arroyo Grande has plans to plant new trees all throughout the city this year.

“We received a grant from the San Luis Coastal Resource Conservation Distrist for $990 and basically that grant is to help us plant 10 trees, says Kristen Barneich. She is the president of the organization and says planting the Brisbane Box and Little Gem Mangolia trees will help serve many purposes.

She says they help to cool down the areas around them and also provide a habitat for wildlife. “We chose to plant these trees there were trees there some of them died some of them were hit by cars so we are actually replacing trees that are not there any longer,” she says.

The grant will also help serve another purpose and enlarge tree wells. “A tree well is the area between the curb and gutter and the back of the sidewalk along the street where its open where you can plant trees,” says Barneich.

The tree wells will help direct rain water to one specific place. “It picks up a lot of pollutants along the way and goes into our water ways into our creeks and into our oceans and what this grant is designed to do is to slow down that rain water and put it back into the ground,” she says.
