Carpinteria Surf Shop Releases Video, Pictures in Search for Thief

A-Frame Surf Shop in Carpinteria is getting as many video clips and pictures as it can out to the local community to help locate a thief who broke in over the weekend.

It happened Sunday morning at 2:30 a.m.

Cameras caught the images, but the suspect wore a mask. His size, walk, mannerisms, and his vehicle, however, may still lead detectives to this criminal. (Watch surveillance videos below)

Cameras inside and outside of the store show a white Toyota Tacoma pick up truck stopping at the building on Santa Claus Lane and a person getting out to look around the site, then leaving.

A few minutes later he is back and throws a metal umbrella base through a glass door.

From there, the suspect quickly goes for high end Maui Jim and Hobie sunglasses along with Nixon watches.

“That tells me he knew exactly where he wanted to go,” said A-Frame owner, Sam Holcombe. The items take were “small and expensive” and the thief could get out quickly.

But he came back in a few moments later.

“His second time, when he comes into the store about 15 feet and grabbed that rack of A-Frame shirts then his pace picks up and he swings around around the cash counter on his way back out and grabs a few more pairs of Hobie cat glasses and splits,” said Holcombe.

Video from cameras on nearby stores will also be checked as part of the investigation to identify the truck used.

“It’s a small two wheel drive white Toyota Tacoma, pretty new. It has a black bed liner and a black tool box in the back,” said Holcombe who also pointed out it had a single cab design.

The suspect also wore an A-Frame cap, made special for employees at a surf camp. That doesn’t narrow the field down and Holcombe does not believe it is anyone on his staff, but instead someone who is familiar with the store, its operations, and the surfing programs they run.

The store is working with the Sheriff’s department, the surfing community and citizens through the release of video and pictures from the break in to try and identify the suspect.

A reward in cash or surfing gear has been offered by A-Frame to anyone who helps lead them to the suspect.
