Flag Pole Snaps At Veterans Memorial Building in Santa Barbara During Powerful Winds

A wooden flag pole in front of the Santa Barbara Veterans Memorial Building snapped during the powerful wind storm that exploded through the area last night.

It’s unknown exactly when it happened. Last night’s winds were destructive, with speeds in excess of 50 miles per hour in some areas. Nearby numerous trees were damaged or shredded by the wind force.

Santa Barbara City Fire crews were called to use a ladder truck as part of the flagpole removal process. A portion of the pole was on the roof of the Cabrillo Blvd. building and had to be carefully cut up.

Firefighters using a rope and pulley system were able to lift the other piece out of its metal stand and bring it down. This pole had the U.S. flag on it.

The pole nearby with the California flag was not damaged and it is still standing.
