New Linear Trail Creates Safe Routes to Schools

Getting to school is now a lot easier for hundreds of students at El Camino Elementary School and San Marcos High School.

The County of Santa Barbara in partnership with the Santa Barbara Unified School District just finished re-doing a trail that connects nearby neighborhoods to the schools.

The trail is used by hundreds of parent’s with their children during the school year, before the project was completed the trail was often flooded and uneven.

“I thank the Public Works Department for the design. They have made it now so there won’t be flooding there. If you can imagine parents trying to use strollers getting through this flooded area. Now they have put in appropriate drainage so that the pathway will be much more appropriate and safe for parents taking their kids,” said Santa Barbara County, Second District supervisor Janet Wolf.

The new trail is 1,300 linear feet of all-weather material that is able to accommodate bicyclist and pedestrians.

The project cost just about $170,000.

All the construction was completed during the school summer recess to minimize impacts to the community.
