Attempted Murder Suspect Takes His Own Life

Just after 4 a.m. Monday Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a stabbing that occurred in the 600 block of Mayrum Street in an unincorporated area of Santa Barbara.

When Sheriff’s Deputies arrived, they discovered the victim, 56-year-old Rubel Trevino, had been stabbed several times. He was transported to a local hospital where he underwent surgery and is recovering from his injuries.

The victim was able to identify the suspect who had broken into his residence while he was sleeping and allegedly committed the stabbing as his business partner, 66-year-old Thomas Hutchison of Goleta.

The victim was able to get away from the suspect and run outside to call for help. The suspect then fled on foot. Approximately fifteen minutes later, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a subject attempting to jump from the Winchester overpass in Goleta.

When Sheriff’s Deputies arrived to make contact with the subject, he jumped from the overpass and landed below on the shoulder of the northbound 101 freeway.

Despite life-saving measures by paramedics, the subject was pronounced dead at the scene.

The decedent has been positively identified as Thomas Hutchison the same suspect who was involved in the stabbing prior to jumping off the overpass.
