Elderly Driver Crashes Into Ralphs Market

A 91-year-old Santa Barbara driver crashed his car though the front entrance of Ralphs Market on Saturday night.

The incident occurred at about 9:40 p.m. on the 2800 block of De La Vina Street.

The driver was not injured and no one was hit.

One witness only identified as Gene said, “It sounded like 50 shopping carts got tipped over all at once, and there was a woman a few feet away and she said that it sounded like a car. I’ve heard car crashes before and it’s just like that, kabang! I didn’t think that someone would be taking the shortcut.”

The store was closed for the remainder of the night and the car towed out of the building.

Police said the accident was caused by operator error.
