Pit bull injured by sheriff’s deputy

A sheriff’s deputy trying to contact a woman on probation shot and wounded a pit bull. Sheriff Geoff Dean said the dog got out of the door as the woman ran into a home near the corner of Larkspur Drive and Spring Street, north of Ventura.

Dean said the officer used a baton, but when that didn’t work, opened fire to protect himself and his partner.

The dog is on the mend in the care of animal services, but its owner has not been found.

Deputies said they had been called to the area because of complaints about aggressive dogs before.
