Shark encounter shuts down local beaches

In the middle of a summer heat wave, the waters at three local beaches are off limits after two-off duty firefighters encountered a great white shark at Tajiguas State Beach, one mile west of Refugio State Beach.

The men contacted State Parks officials on Saturday afternoon to report the incident. They say the 12-foot-long shark came between their kayaks, and lifted one of the kayaks out of the water. Luckily, it didn’t capsize. The men were not hurt.

State Park Official Rich Rozzelle tells NewsChannel 3 that because of the shark’s aggressive behavior, the waters off Refugio State Beach, El Capitan State Beach, and Tajiguas will close for 72 hours. The beach areas will remain open.
