Westlake advances to regional semifinals in CIF State Tournament

This storming the court stuff is getting fun at Westlake High School. The Warriors edged La Costa Canyon 66-64 in a second round CIF State Tournament Division 2 boys basketball game.

Larry Bush’ lay up with one minute left gave Westlake a 66-61 lead. But Tommy McCarthy’s three-pointer with 50 seconds to play cut the Warriors lead to 66-64. With 4.7 seconds remaining it was still 66-64 and La Costa Canyon had the ball. Jeff Van Dyke, who had a game-high 22 points, missed a three-pointer and a putback attempt was off as time expired. The big home crowd rushed the floor to celebrate Westlake’s first-ever trip to the regional semifinals.

Josh Brooks and Marcos Soto each scored 17 points for the Warriors while Bush added 16. Westlake will play at J.W. North on Tuesday.
