Popular donut shop loses customers during COVID-19 pandemic

ORCUTT, Calif. - The shutdown of group gatherings in California is costing Orcutt's Golden Donut business.

"No church no school no sports. Those three are important for our donut shop," said Houth Hak with Golden Donut.

Even though the family owned business is still serving donuts, owners say most of their customers were families who don't have events to buy for.

"Those three are supporting us quite a bit and on Saturday and Sunday," said Hak.

Normally the donut shop gets a thousand customers on the weekend.

Now they’re down to about 600.

But Golden Donuts is still surviving thanks to customers like Terri Ramos.

"My children love their donut holes and that’s why I come here and so when my grandchildren are with me I love to come here for the donut holes," said Ramos.

Owners say having a patio has been helpful during the pandemic where customers can come to enjoy their donuts.

"We still have a lot of support. They always come, especially people working. So we appreciate them very much," said Hak.

While it’s not clear what the future has in store, Ramos plans to keep coming back to buy more donuts. "I wish more people would come but I’m really glad that they’re still open it makes me really happy when I drive by."
