More Santa Maria sports facilities in the works to reopen July
SANTA MARIA, Calif. - It is a busy week for the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department as several sports facilities are in the works to reopen.
Whether it’s playing ball or riding a skateboard, many are anxious to get outside including Walter Oberg who was hoping to go skateboarding at Fletcher Park Tuesday afternoon.
"It’s been bad because I’ve just been stuck in my front yard skating and trying to learn new tricks," said Oberg.
Due to the Coronavirus, most sports facilities have been closed including the Fletcher Skateboard Park, the Lawn Bowler, and the Hagerman Softball Complex.
But all three are in the process of being reopened.
"All these programs will be open with restrictions and limitations. Hopefully the public will abide by those such as social distancing and wearing a mask when appropriate," said Alex Posada with the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department.
Right now the skate park is filled with wood chips, but they’re expected to be cleared within the next week.
"We’re excited to get our facilities open like the skate park park. It’s important to get the youth back out using it," said Posada.
"I’m really happy they it’s keeping because this is one of my favorite places to go and have fun with my friends," said Oberg.
Sports goers of all ages are looking forward to the reopenings.
"We’re all anxious foaming at the bit and they’re ready. You know it provides recreation exercise and enjoyment," said softball player Al Ramos.
The three facilities are expected to reopen during the first week of July.
