Canteen sales will help feed hundreds of kids during the COVID-19 crisis

Canteen sales will raise money for a food program for kids

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - There's a new way to quench your thirst and help the United Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara County.

A new canteen is now being sold by The Shop restaurant on Milpas Street for $5. The customer gets the canteen and an iced tea, and the money goes directly to the Food4kids drive.

The drive is operated by the United Boys & Girls club to provide healthy meals when the children are not at school during the COVID-19 rules.

Shop owner Dudley Michael says he knows firsthand about the food insecurity issues in the area, and wanted to partner with a program to provide healthy meals.

"You can come over to The Shop here on Milpas. They are $5. You can get a bite to eat while you are here. No big deal. We will donate the $5 directly to the Boys and Girls Club," said Michael.

He had the canteens from a previous fundraiser he once did for another cause and they were ready to go for this timely cause.

He has 2000 canteens. If they are all sold, that will fund 40 days of meals.

Dudley says he is open for lunch and dinner, and customers can also get the canteens when they order through a delivery service.
