Carpinteria Family Starts Early Halloween Costume Drive for Local Kids

CARPINTERIA, Calif. (KEYT) — Halloween may still be months away, but one Carpinteria family is already working to make sure local children have a costume to wear.

The Cos-Tomb Drive is returning for its third year, collecting new and gently used Halloween costumes and giving them to local children at no cost and with no requirements.

The effort began after organizer learned about a student in her son’s class who skipped school on Halloween because his family could not afford a costume. The child did not want to attend without one while classmates took part in the school parade and Halloween activities.

The experience inspired her family to begin collecting costumes that other children have outgrown or no longer use.

This year, organizers expect greater need and are getting an early start. Collection boxes are being placed around Carpinteria for community donations.

The drive also gives costumes that may have been worn only a few times another life instead of sending them to the landfill.

The family is partnering with the Carpinteria Children’s Project to distribute the donated costumes.

The free costume giveaway is scheduled for Oct. 12 at the Carpinteria Children’s Project.
