No new destination for Santa Maria Airport
The San Luis Obispo Airport is now adding another flight service to their list. On Monday, they announced United Airlines will have nonstop flights from San Luis Obispo to Denver.
Airport officials say the service, operated by SkyWest Airlines, will begin June 8 with the first flight leaving to Denver at 7:10 p.m.
“United Airlines is proud to offer our customers in San Luis Obispo a new way to connect to the places and moments that matter most,” said Anthony Toth, United’s managing director of Sales. “Business and leisure travelers now have conveniently timed daily flights to Denver and multiple opportunities to connect to other cities throughout the Western U.S. and beyond.”
But what does that mean for the Santa Maria Airport, which was hoping it would get flight services to Denver?
Right now, they have two airlines flying out of the airport that include Allegiant to Las Vegas and Mokulele Airlines to Los Angles.
“The demographics here are different than Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo, we just need to change the destination that our demographics require,” says David Baskett, Director of the Santa Maria Airport.
He says he recently met with the Chamber of Commerce to talk about flights to Sacramento. He says they are also working with American Airlines to get a direct flight to Phoenix.
“As Santa Maria grows and the population grows the demand will grow here and support the major airlines to return here or start a new services,” says Baskett.
