Closing Arguments Begin in Jane Laut Murder Trial
Closing arguments began Tuesday in the Jane Laut murder trial. The Oxnard woman is accused of killing her Olympic medalist husband, Dave Laut. The murder took place in the backyard of their home on August 27, 2009.
The trial that started in the beginning of February is now in it’s final days. On Tuesday the prosecution gave its closing arguments.
“When you choose a firearm. When you choose a handgun that is loaded with six shots and you use all six shots to shoot him when he is standing and down and down and turned to you that is a clear intent to kill that is murder,” said Senior Deputy District Attorney Ramen Minoui.
The prosecution also played the 911 tape of Jane Laut calling for help, where she described hearing shots and a possible prowler in her backyard.
The jury was also shown the interview between detectives and Laut the night her husband was killed. In those interviews she initially said he was killed by a proler. It wasn’t until police found the murder weapon that she changed her story.
“The defendant knows the murder weapon has been found and it is now time for plan B. Plan A someone else did it is not going to work, The Oxnard Police Department conducted that search warrant and they found the murder weapon in that grandfather clock,” said Minoui.
Defense Attorney Ron Bamieh is expected to start his closing arguments Wednesday, after the prosecution wraps up its.
Bamieh claims Laut killed her husband in self defense. It will be up to a jury to decide if Laut is guilty of manslaughter or first-degree murder later this week.
