Lompoc installing security cameras in effort to improve public safety
LOMPOC, Calif. - The City of Lompoc is installing dozens of security cameras in strategic locations throughout the city in an attempt to improve public safety.
The city has already installed 12 cameras with plans to install between 80 and 100 in total in various locations throughout the city. The locations of the cameras have not been disclosed.
City officials say the cameras will be primarily used to promote public safety, but will also be used to collect traffic data and help identify "quality-of-life" issues. The cameras are mobile and can be moved around as needed. According to a press release issued by the city, money was specifically set aside for the cameras.
The Lompoc Police Department will have access to the camera footage and is involved with the strategic placing of the equipment.
“We at the Lompoc Police Department want to do everything possible to make the city safer,” said Police Chief Joe Mariani in the press release. “Surveillance cameras are an important tool in deterring and solving crime in the city.”
Lompoc has experienced seven homicides in 2019 alone, and the police force has seen some positions left unfilled due to a deficit that lead to cuts in the biennial budget.
