Santa Barbara Bowl Hosts Dia De Los Muertos Event and Open House
The Santa Barbara Bowl has a big Dia de Los Muertos event this weekend with a costume contest, a live show, and a second day event with a free open house where a special display will be open to the public for viewing.
Organizer Nichole Pierpont says the bowl will be a “magical place” as people enter for the Saturday night show featuring Cafe Tacuba, Grammy winners – Ozomatli, Las Cafeteras, Hy Brasil and Azteca dancers. Prior to the show there will be a Dia de Los Muertos costume contest.
On the walk to the bowl seats, in the Glen area, will be several altars created by over a dozen local groups to remembers special people in their lives. There will be special displays for the late farm worker leader Cesar Chavez, and Jerry Garcia former lead singer of the Grateful Dead who often performed at the bowl.
Many of the decorations have come from Oaxaca, Mexico and some are historic from the past performances during Old Spanish Days in Mexico.
After the Saturday show, the creative displays will be open for the public on Sunday from noon until 4 p.m. There will be light entertainment in that area as well.
That viewing is free for everyone in the community. (Note: the concert mentioned above is NOT free. Tickets are available at the bowl. Only the Sunday open house is free.)
