Dog Shot by Deputy on the Mend

The Diana Basehart Foundation’s veterinary coordinator Karen Perkins said Peyton is recovering from surgery after being shot by a Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputy.

The shooting happened Wednesday at a home on the 4500 block of Auhay Drive.

The dogs owner, Julie Morgan, said the deputies were doing a probation check on another resident of the home when her Border Collie started barking.

The officer felt threatened and fired a single shot that went right through the dog’s nose, but it didn’t prevent the dog from breathing.

The dog needed $5,000 worth of surgery at the Care Pet Hospital on E. Haley Street in Santa Barbara.

The Diana Basehart Foundation was created to pay for veterinary care when pet owners can’t afford to.

Perkins said pets save lives all the time, so this is a way of giving back.

She said the organization doesn’t judge how a dog is injured.

The female dog is home from the pet hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
