SWAT detains suspect after two hour standoff

A suspect is custody after a two hour stand off in Goleta. He was found a few houses down from where sheriff deputies began searching.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s SWAT team surrounded a home in the 7400 block of San Blanco Drive.

It began just before 10 a.m. Friday. Authorities said the incident started with a dispute between a mother and son.

Lt. Kelly Moore said the mother was injured but escaped with her daughter and contacted the Sheriff’s Department.

“Then there was some information that he (the suspect) had access to some firearms. So we locked it down, backed out and called the SWAT team,” said Moore.

Eventually the suspect, 20 year old Felipe Barrera was caught in a home nearby.

Authorities say he used a sports racket to assault his mother, but they also found a loaded .22 caliber rifle in the home when it was searched.

Barrera faces charges of; assault with a deadly weapon, destroying a communications device to prevent someone from calling law enforcement, and committing a felony while out on bail.

A 17 year old juvenile was also arrested for not being truthful with law enforcement.

Homes in the area were evacuated during the investigation.
