Cal Poly University San Luis Obispo announced plans to build new student residence facilities near the university’s entrance on Grand Avenue Wednesday.

The new facilities will be built on what is now a large parking lot across Grand Avenue from the current student housing.

It will be home for about 1,400 first-year students. It is slated to be done by the 2018-2019 academic year.

The project and final plans will need the approval of the California State University system’s board of trustees set for 2015.
