Carpinteria Sand Berm Going Up to Protect Coastal Properties

CARPINTERIA, Calif. (KEYT) - A protective sand berm is going up this week in Carpinteria.

It will be located right in front of beach front structures from Ash Ave. to Linden Ave.

Precise measurements were taken before the construction took place with a bulldozer operated by Peter Lapidus Construction.

The city says it will be about 1400 feet long and approximately nine and half feet tall.

The project was approved by the city council and the California Coastal Commission.

Many people who have primary or rental properties in the area have been reinforcing their decks and windows prior to the expected harsh upcoming weather.

Richard Giacopuzzi said, "so we took the mat up  and they are going to put a berm in front to protect it and we are going to get some sand bags and we are going to put it in front of the sliders to protect the areas most prone to have problems."

It's likely as the storms and higher tides come in, more work will have be done again during the upcoming months until the risks subside.

That's generally in the spring.

There will not be a sand berm in front of the state beach east of Linden Ave.

The highest tides of the year are expected around November 24th and December 23rd.
