VENTURA, Calif. (KEYT) A belated celebration of life took place for civil rights activist Lupe Anguiano in Ventura.

UCLA archivist Xaviera Flores said her collection, gifted to the university, will be part of American History.

"She was someone who felt like family, like a tia to many students to come and women, young females inspired by her work," said Flores.

Anguino was a founding member of the National Women's Political Caucus with Gloria Steinem and Bella Abzug.

The former nun also led the grape boycott and worked across the aisle to advocate for the poor and the environment.

One her niece's shared a funny story about her habit.

"My tia was a nun and we used to have this flying nun tree topper," said Brittany Francis.

One of her nephews led the service at Sacred Heart Church in Ventura on Thursday.

Lupe Anguiano lived for decades in Oxnard and then moved to Arizona to be with family.

She died in her sleep in June at the age of 97.
