SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) - Students and staff at Vieja Valley Elementary gathered for a rousing and heart-warming send off for the school's beloved crossing guard, Gwendolyn "Gwen" Clark, who hung up her stop paddle and florescent vest after Thursday morning's shift.

The 94-year-old volunteer was a comforting presence for children and families getting to and from the Vieja Valley Elementary School campus for more than 20-years, rain or shine.

Jestin St. Peter, Principal of Vieja Valley, shared that Clark was known for remembering students and families by name and became a cherished part of the neighborhood. She even knows the neighborhood dogs by name and always keeps treats in her pocket for her four-legged friends!

"Gwen has been so much more than a crossing guard. She's been a friend, a neighbor, and a source of kindness and encouragement to generations of students and families," said St. Peter. "She truly represents the heart and spirit of Vieja Valley."

Students posted handmade signs around campus and read letters during Clark's heartfelt send-off. Clark also received special recognition from Hope School District Superintendent Dr. Anne Hubbard and, Santa Barbara County Supervisor Laura Capps.
