CARPINTERIA, Calif. (KEYT) — A Halloween costume giveaway intended to bring joy to children from low-income families drew just 16 children this year, a sharp decline from previous years.

The family behind the event believes fears surrounding immigration enforcement kept many families home.

Two years ago, the giveaway served 200 children. That number dropped to 100 last year before falling to just 16 this year.

The event’s host believes recent immigration raids have left families afraid to leave their homes, even for activities intended for children.

The host also pointed to declining participation in local food assistance programs, raising concerns that immigration fears are affecting access to essential community resources.

For the family behind the giveaway, the disappointing turnout means more children may miss out on a holiday meant to celebrate childhood, creativity and fun.
