Four dead in Orcutt multiple homicide and deputy involved shooting

(Update: 5:36 p.m.) The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office released the identities of the victims and suspect in the Orcutt triple homicide.

Deputies say the suspect is 43-year-old David McNabb.

The victims include his sister, 34-year-old Nicole McNabb, his mother 64-year-old Melanie McNabb, and 63-year-old Carlos Echavarria.

Mcnabb was shot and killed by deputies Friday night.

David McNabb worked at the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office as a custody deputy from 2001 to March 2012. Officials add that he voluntarily resigned from that job.

Deputies say he was arrested by Oxnard Police in September 2012.

McNabb was convicted of felony domestic violence in May 2014 and sentenced to jail.

The motive remains under investigation.

(Update: 3:55 p.m.) The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office released new details about a triple homicide in Orcutt.

Deputies are not releasing the names of the victims until the whole family has been notified.

They are revealing that the victims and lived in the home with the suspect.

Deputies say all of the victims were stabbed and beaten to death by the suspect.

The motive is still under investigation.

Officials are also conducting an officer-involved shooting investigation for the case.

Deputies say they used less than lethal rounds in hopes of stopping the armed suspect.

But they shot him because they felt he was still posing an immediate threat.

The suspect died in the hospital.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department says four people are dead in a multiple homicide investigation and deputy involved shooting in the Oakhill Estates gated community in Orcutt.

The Sheriff’s Department says an unidentified woman entered a home on the 5900 block of Oakhill Road just after 8:00 p.m. Friday and discovered a victim covered in blood in a bathtub.

The Sheriff’s Department says she fled the scene and called 911.

Deputies responded and determined a suspect was barricaded inside the home armed with a rifle, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

An emergency notification was sent to all residents in Oakhill Estates advising them to shelter in place and the gated community was sealed off by law enforcement.

The County Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Team and Sheriff’s Hostage Negotiation Team were called to the scene.

Eventually there was a confrontation between the armed suspect and deputies who, according to the Sheriff’s Department, initially used less lethal force but ultimately ended up shooting the suspect.

The suspect was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.

The Sheriff’s Department says deputies found three other apparent homicide victims inside the home.

The incident remains under investigation and identification of the suspect and the apparent homicide victims has not yet been released by the Sheriff’s Department.

(UPDATE 11:45 p.m.) Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Kelly Hoover confirms that three people are dead and an armed suspect was shot by law enforcement.

The deceased were found in a home in Orcutt late Friday night after a situation involving a barricaded subject.

Hoover says a wounded victim called 9-1-1 from the bathroom of a home on the 5900 block of Oakhill Drive. That’s just off the Orcutt Expressway and East Rice Ranch Road.

Upon entering the home, sheriff’s deputies deemed the barricaded suspect an immediate threat and shot the suspect. Reports indicated he was armed with a rifle. The man in question has been taken to an area hospital. There is no word on his condition at this time.

Hoover notes that this is now an officer-involved shooting investigation in addition to the investigation surrounding the three fatalities.

The shelter in place order for the area has been lifted. Officials believe this is an isolated incident as it was contained to the home.
