(CNN) — The FBI searched a Beverly Hills mansion in connection to an investigation into former Rep. Eric Swalwell, according to two people familiar with the probe. The home is owned by a Swalwell donor, one of the people said.
CNN has reached out to a lawyer for Swalwell for comment.
The FBI said in a statement to CNN that the agency ran “an operation in the Los Angeles region related to an ongoing criminal investigation,” but declined to comment further.
The Democrat resigned from Congress and dropped his gubernatorial bid in April after reporting from CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle detailed allegations of sexual misconduct, including one former staffer who said he had raped her. He has denied the allegations.
The home the FBI searched Tuesday belongs to Stephen Cloobeck, a wealthy developer and Swalwell donor, according to two people familiar with the matter.
At the end of Swalwell’s campaign, it was widely reported that he stayed at Cloobeck’s mansion in Beverly Hills. Cloobeck had announced his own gubernatorial run before later endorsing Swalwell.
Cloobeck donated $1 million on March 13 to an independent expenditure group supporting Swalwell’s gubernatorial campaign, according to California campaign finance records. He has been donating to campaigns in California for two decades.
When the allegations surfaced, however, Cloobeck tried to distance himself from Swalwell.
“I am no longer associated with a man that takes advantage of women,” Cloobeck told the New York Post in April. “I support women’s rights.”
CNN has attempted to reach Cloobeck and a representative for comment.
Swalwell is the subject of state and federal investigations.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department opened criminal investigations into Swalwell in the wake of CNN’s reporting.
In August, federal agents seized electronic devices from Swalwell at the San Francisco airport and then raided his home in Washington, DC, the next day as part of an ongoing probe connected to sexual assault allegations, sources familiar with the investigation told CNN at the time.
