Repairs begin on storm-damaged Halcyon Road in Arroyo Grande
ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. – The San Luis Obispo County Public Works Department is beginning a week-long project to repair a portion of Halcyon Road in Arroyo Grande that collapsed during a rainstorm last week.
"Public Works got notified last week after the big storm over New Year's about erosion on Halcyon Road, which ended up losing part of the lane due to a slide on the hill," said Joshua Robert, San Luis Obispo County Public Works Transportation Division Manager. "(Today), county crews with some support from contractors, are out excavating the hole, finding competent material backfilling and then we'll be paving the road later this week.
Monday's work kicked off a project that is expected to last several days.
"Right now, county crews with some support from contractors are out excavating the hole, finding competent material backfilling and then we'll be paving the road later this week," said Roberts. "Hopefully if we do our job right, you won't notice the work after it's all completed, so reconstructing the embankment, backfilling the hole, repaving the road striping and installing a new AC curve along that side, keep the water from going over the edge and creating this problem again in the future."
The damaged portion of the road is located on the steep incline up to the mesa, near Highway 1, between Cienaga Street and Mesa View Drive.
The normally busy roadway is a vital link between the Five Cities up onto the Nipomo Mesa, as well as into Northern Santa Barbara County and Guadalupe. Since the collapse, the roadway up to the mesa has been closed to through traffic.
"(The county) is sensitive to the road closure," said Roberts. "The inconvenience it's causing for residents, and especially with all the work that's happening on Highway 1 with Caltrans. Our goal is get the road open as soon as possible. We're out there today and we'll be working straight through until it's completed. We're advising that folks avoid the area during construction. We know that Highway one can be congested, so alternate routes like Los Berros (Road), El Campo Road are available for motorists as well."
Construction on Halcyon Road is expected to be completed by this weekend.
