NEW CUYAMA, Calif. — A vegetation fire Saturday afternoon burned 5,464 acres in New Cuyama, and is now 100% contained, according to Santa Barbara County Fire PIO Scott Safechuck.

SB County Fire diverted their resources over to New Cuyama after brush fire was contained in Lompoc at approximately 1:21 p.m.

The fire, dubbed the "Plant Incident" or "Plant Fire" on Highway 166 and Perkins Road.

According to Safechuck, evacuation orders placed from Aliso Canyon Road to Wasioja Road is now lifted

Safechuck says, 7 agencies and 730 personnel responded and are helping contain the fire.

“Today, we had a community meeting which was really productive. We have invited the community to come out here and really learn about the operation that's going on and any assistance that they might need, including with the Red Cross," said Safechuck.

The California Highway Patrol closed down Highway 166 and diverted traffic to Highway 101 Saturday evening, but CHP opened Hwy 166 Sunday morning.

California Senator Monique Limon, who represents Ventura County and Santa Barbara County 19th District said in a tweet, "I am continuing to monitor the progress of the vegetation fire in New Cuyama and will keep you all updated as we learn more."

Los Padres National Forest PIO Flemming Bertelsen says the incoming storm will also help contain the fire.

“With this rain that we're coming in from the tropical storm, which is something we never get the pleasure of seeing, I think it's going to put all of us in a frame of mind where we might start to be a little bit optimistic that at least for the next month or so, we might see diminished fire behavior out here," said Bertelsen.

Safechuck says with the current weather conditions it is vital to register for for real time alerts and updates.
