Suspect charged in connection to Santa Maria shooting
SANTA MARIA, Calif. - The suspect arrested for a shooting in Santa Maria on Monday has been charged and is awaiting his preliminary hearing.
Alberto Fidel Reyes, 38, of Santa Maria appeared in court on Tuesday where he pled not guilty to the charges of attempted murder and assault with a semi-automatic firearm.
Deputy District Attorney John DeChaine said Reyes waived time for a preliminary hearing - in other words - he chose not to have a speedy trial.
Reyes will be in Department 7 of the Superior Court in Santa Maria on Dec. 16 in order to set up his preliminary hearing.
He was arrested in connection to a shooting that took place in Santa Maria last week.
Reyes was arrested Wednesday evening, Dec. 4, following a traffic stop on the 900 block of W. Morrison Avenue.
The shooting occurred Monday, Dec. 2, at the 600 block of North Palisade Drive where a man was found on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.
Neighbors gave eyewitness accounts to the shooting the day of the crime.
