Dos Pueblos High School celebrates new state-of-the-art Virgil Elings Media Arts and Communications Center in Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – It was a special day of celebration at Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta.

"I’m very excited to be here. I am co-editor and yearbook so that is why I’m here to celebrate our accomplishments and celebrate this new building for all of our media programs," said student Violet Vance of Dos Pueblos High School.

Classes have already moved into the new state-of-the-art Virgil Elings Media Arts and Communications Center.

"Collaboration and our designs and all of our ideas be together as a unit and create something so special for our school and our community has really been inspiring," said student Sierra Jewell of Dos Pueblos High School.

The Dos Pueblos Media program serves hundreds of students each year, teaching broadcast and journalism classes, along with yearbook.

Some parts of the facility may look familiar as your NewsChannel donated its news desk to the school.

“We are very grateful to KEYT. And we count them as partners and really get the stories of the human experience in Santa Barbara and Goleta," said superintendent Hilda Maldonado of the Santa Barbara Unified School District.

Teachers believe working in the same facility will provide a comprehensive media arts education to hundreds of students annually.

Computer Science, Digital Arts, Photography, Graphics, and Animation classes are also taught in the building.

“That’s why it’s all open glass and sliding doors between rooms ... and we’re seeing students having great success with it," said teacher John Dent of Dos Pueblos High School.

DP News broadcasts a daily newscast to the campus each day, produces podcasts, and publishes a student newspaper.

"For the future for the building is to continue to create such great journalism and aspirations, and like goals for one another and for the school," said Jewell.

The new building is part of a larger Career and Technical Education hub on the south end of the Dos Pueblos campus.
