Santa Barbara County officials emphasize coping skills ahead of five year Montecito mudslide anniversary

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif.– As rain hits the Central Coast ahead of the five-year anniversary of the 2018 Montecito Mudslide, county officials issue coping and mental health resources for residents triggered by the heavy storm.

Santa Barbara County and the Montecito Fire Department recommend the following coping tips.

  • Acknowledge feelings you may be having
  • Stay connected with others and share feelings and experiences
  • Accept kindness and support from others
  • Be gentle with yourself
  • Engage in healthy activities
  • Keep routines
  • Draw upon faith/spirituality
  • Help others
  • Reach out for support when needed

Community members emotionally struggling during the storm can connect with the Community Wellness Team, formed in response to the 1/9 Debris Flow remains available to offer support, by calling 805-364-2750.

Anyone in a mental health crisis should call the 24/7 county access line at 1-888-868-1649 or the national suicide hotline at 988.
