Dana Adobe Heritage Day Brings Nipomo History To Life This Weekend
NIPOMO, Calif. (KEYT) - Central Coast history will come alive this weekend in Nipomo during the annual Dana Adobe Heritage Day.
The event will take place Saturday at the Dana Adobe, a California State Historical Landmark, giving visitors an opportunity to step back in time and learn more about the history, culture and traditions of early Nipomo and 19th-century coastal California.
Heritage Day will feature live historical reenactments, demonstrations and guided tours of the historic site.
"We try to get a lot of living historians that reenact the era, which is the late Rancho period and early California from about 1840 to about 1860," Dana Adobe docent and Heritage Day coordinator Terry Handy said. "All these people, we come here and celebrate what it was like to to live here, and kind of celebrate the Dana Adobe and the Rancho and other groups that were in the area, whether it was Chumash, or people going through or gold miners or whatever. We try to simulate that for the day and have a lot of fun doing it."
Visitors can also enjoy live music, dancing performances and a variety of family-friendly activities.
"People can come and they can watch dancers and listen to some music and talk to the re-enactors and see some crafts being done," said Handy. "We have a full-on blacksmith who will be here. There will be all sorts of food and all sorts of games and activities for children that are period for the era. We just have a great time together and celebrating Nipomo and the Central Coast."
Organizers explain the annual event provides the community with an engaging way to experience local history while learning about the people and traditions that helped shape the region.
"It's a time where they can make history come alive a little bit," said Handy. "It just gives us a great opportunity to come together and have a great time and learn some history as well."
Dana Adobe Heritage Day runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 12.
Admission for adults has been reduced this year to $5, while children of all ages can attend for free.
"We wanted to lower the price and give everybody an opportunity to come out and have a great time," said Handy. "We're going to have some non-historic vendors here as well, and all sorts of food, so come out and celebrate and just have a have a great day here in beautiful Nipomo."
