Three charged in connection to February Pismo Beach shooting

PISMO BEACH, Calif. – One of the men charged in connection to a shooting in Pismo Beach in February was taken into custody on Thursday.

On Monday, Jul. 24 of this year, San Luis Obispo County District Attorney's Office filed charges against three people for the Feb. 18, 2023 shooting in Pismo Beach which resulted in the death of one man.

At 11:47 p.m. on Feb. 18, Gustavo Aquino of Fresno was shot multiple times at the Pismo Beach pier promenade parking lot. Aquino was transported to Marian Hospital where he died from his injuries.

According to Pismo Beach Police Department (PBPD), Aquino was approached by three males, one 19-year-old and two juveniles, who verbally accosted Aquino in the parking lot of the Pismo Beach pier.

During the altercation, one of the male juveniles, a 15-year-old, retrieved a firearm from a vehicle in the parking lot and fired three rounds at Aquino, hitting him more than once detail PBPD.

PBPD served approximately 30 search warrants over the course of their investigation in collaboration with multiple other California law enforcement agencies.

The 15-year-old from the shooting was found to be on active probation out of Kings County with a probation violation warrant that had also been issued for his arrest.

On May 19, the 15-year-old was arrested by Hanford Police Department on unrelated charges as well as his probation violation warrant. He is currently in the custody of the Kings County Juvenile Center awaiting proceedings on those charges.

The owner and driver of the vehicle used to flee the scene, 19-year-old Anthony Robert Hernandez of Delano, was arrested and booked into Kern County Jail on Thursday, Aug. 3 detail PBPD.

Hernandez has been charged with PC 32- Accessory to the commission of a felony. His bail has been set at $20,000.

Daniel Jacob Santillana of Hanford was also charged in connection to the shooting on Jul. 24. He was found to be in the custody of the Kings County Sheriff's Office Jail for an unrelated arrest and is awaiting transfer to San Luis Obispo County Jail.

Santillana was charged with violation of PC 245(b)- Assault with a firearm and PC 186.22(b)-Commission of a felony in association with a street gang. His bail has been set at $90,000.
