Firefighters get set for 69-floor stair climb competition in a cancer fundraiser

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Firefighters from the Central Coast will be making a special climb to raise money in the fight against cancer through the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society.

Some of the firefighters can be seen lately on their workouts up and down the stadium stairs at Santa Barbara City College.

The Carpinteria-Summerland firefighters are doing multiple climbs and also working out on stair climber machines.

The event is March 13 in Seattle.

Carpinteria Fire Engineer Keenan Marting said during a recent workout, "in Seattle we will climb 69 flights of stairs with our full gear on,  with our masks on, breathing off of a cylinder and we will be going up the 69 flights, racing firefighters from around the world. We will be in different groups and they will be timing everyone to see who can do it the fastest."

Firefighters say they have seen the funds from this cause help fellow firefighters and their families.

Central Coast firefighters involved in this event are going to Seattle from Santa Barbara County, Carpinteria Fire, Ventura Fire and Cal Fire San Luis Obispo.
